Widely considered amongst the greatest players to ever pick up a dart, Raymond van Barneveld is amongst an elite club of just four players who have won world titles in both the BDO and PDC. Van Barneveld, or Barney as he is more affectionately known, completed the remarkable feat in his debut season in the PDC, beating Phil Taylor in the final of the 2007 World Championships at the Circus Tavern in a match that many regard as the greatest ever.
Having won four Lakeside world titles, three International darts leagues two World Masters championships and a couple of World Darts trophies the Dutchman decided in February 2006 that it was time to switch codes and join the PDC. And he didn’t waste anytime making an impact on the more glamorous side of the divide taking the UK Open title within a few months of making the switch, notably beating Taylor in the quarter-finals of the competition. He then went on to beat The Power again 7-6 in the aforementioned PDC World Championships final and defended his UK Open crown the following season.
While his blistering start to life in the PDC would cement Barney’s place in the history books he has failed to build on that early success in terms of titles won. The 2007 Desert Classic was the last major title that Van Barneveld won as an individual – he did win the 2012 PDC World Cup as part of the Netherlands team – as the big Dutchman found himself wrestling with the effects of both diabetes and the mental side of the game.
A first round exit to James Richardson at the 2012 PDC World Championships signalled a new low for the Dutchman’s career. However, fears that his time at the top was over were pushed to one side with a promising start to the 2012 Premier League campaign. The Barney Army may still have a few more years of cheering on their man before he is consigned to the darting history books.
