Adrian Lewis began his darting career under a huge cloud of pressure. From the moment he broke onto the scene he was touted as Phil Taylor’s successor to the thrown. Having also been born in Stoke and practiced with Taylor early in his career the comparisons were as inevitable as they were frequent.

Lewis began his career in the BDO in 2002 but after winning the 2003 British Teenage Open and competing at the 2003 Winmau World Masters he swiftly moved over to the PDC. There he continued to go from strength to strength and work his way up the rankings. He also continued to practice with Taylor until 2007 when an acrimonious split, depending on whose version of the story you read, saw the pair part ways.

He was bestowed the nickname ‘Jackpot’ following a visit to a casino in Las Vegas where he won USD 75,000 but was unable to claim the winnings due to him being younger than the legal age to gamble in the US. It seemed that streak of unfortunate luck was set tot follow him in his professional career.

Lewis faltered in his early career and inconsistencies in his game meant that he took time to realise his obvious potential. He was knocked out at the semi-final stage in the 2007 and 2011 World Matchplay and lost in the final at the 2010 World Grand Prix, and was regularly thwarted by Taylor in televised tournaments.

At the 2010 World Grand Prix he beat Taylor for the first time on television and although he then went on to lose the final to James Wade the result appeared to offer Lewis a new lease of life. At the subsequent World Championships later that year Lewis beat Gary Anderson in the final to claim his first major title and the crown of World Champion.

Jackpot then finished runner-up in the Premier League the following May, where he again beat Taylor in the semis, but at the time of writing has failed to make an authoritative run in any other major tournament.

Perhaps Jackpot can return to his best when the World Championships role around at Alexandra Palace this winter.
